Freshly Picked this month! If you haven't heard of Susan Petersen and her fantabulous little moccasins, you might be living under a rock, or in a cave, or maybe you just don't have an instagram account?? Whatever it is... you need to know about these magical little shoes.
I will be the fist to admit that I was hesitant and even skeptical of FP baby moccs. Not because of the price, or style...but because of the soft sole. Soft sole shoes are great for little babies who only wobble and crawl and scoot about. But, what about for the 2 year olds (like mine) who run wild from sun up to sun down? The ones who are always on their feet, climbing, jumping, and falling down? And what about the toddlers who live in Seattle (like mine) where the ground is wet nearly all of the time??
These were the unanswered questions I had that kept me from jumping on the FP band wagon.
So I was so excited to be given the opportunity to try some out and write a review on these famous little kicks.
I got a pair of moccs in one of their new spring/summer colors, Golden Rod. The color is a true yellow more than mustard yellow. It's a bright, lemony color and it's pretty dang cute. For me, yellow is a neutral, especially when dressing my 2 year old son, Miles. They can be paired with any other color or outfit.
The first thing I noticed was how well they are made. They are sturdy yet soft. The stitching is perfection, and the leather is so beautifully dyed. I may or may not have spent 5 minutes just smelling them.
Now, when you live in the Pacific Northwest, weatherproofing your shoes is second nature. I emailed FP to ask what they recommend for weatherproofing, and they advised me to take them to a shoe repair shop to have them professionally waterproofed. (For me, this is well worth it considering it rains continuously around here!) The leather was not affected in any way by the weatherproofing, they look just the same! I am not speaking in behalf of FP, and I would recommend asking them directly...but for me, I felt the need to do it!
Miles has been running around for weeks now in his moccs. Outside, inside, through grass and dirt, on the pavement, and everything in-between. They are Slightly too big, but they still stay on, and he can still walk in them just fine. FP has a fabulous
size chart to help find the perfect fit for your little.
They have held up incredibly well. The soft sole has not been a problem at all. They are great for running errands when you just need to hurry and throw some shoes on your kid and get moving! They are also nice for gyms and indoor playgrounds where children are required to take off their shoes. Because of the soft sole, we can hit up the slides at the children's museum without having to stop and take off and on shoes.
It's normal for some of the color to be worn away with time. You can see some where this has happened on the bottoms of Miles' moccs, but the tops and sides still look new. I clean them with a damp cloth after a few days of running around.
The one area where Miles has had a bit of a problem in them, was at the out door play ground at our local park. The wood chips are a bit hard to maneuver through with the soft sole. He couldn't find his balance as easy, and I don't think it was very comfortable to feel the wood chips under his feet.
I would absolutely recommend this little dream shoes to anyone looking for a stylish, functional, well made moccasin. I am a firm believer in quality over quantity when it comes to shoes. I would much rather have one well made pair of shoes for my child that he can wear every day than 6 pair of cheap shoes that are hard on his feet. I will buy some for Miles the minute he grows out of these ones, and every kid I should ever have in the future will definitely rock Freshly Picked Moccs!
