merry christmas!

we headed to the phoenix desert for christmas this year! it's always nice to see the sun in the winter, as we don't see it much this time of year, in the northwest.

the week started out pretty rough… including a very sick mama who ended up in the ER the night we were supposed to leave, causing us to change flights and leave a day late. then, when i thought i was doing much better and hadn't thrown up for 24 hours, we boarded the plane, and then BOOM!! more barf!! (i have had some pretty bad luck involving planes and barf this year) turns out, i was not really better… and i spent most of the flight in the airplane bathroom. luckily, later that night, i was able to stop the barfing, and even better, sleep. by the next morning i was a new woman. i ate a burger, and thought i would cry of happiness that something actually tasted good, and stayed inside my body! TMI?

the rest of the week was so great. brandon's family is truly wonderful, and we always have to much fun together. christmas eve was especially fun. we spent the day in the sun at the park, and the evening playing games and wrapping presents.

christmas morning was a blast. watching the 2 toddlers open presents and get excited about new toys is too much fun. miles is in a flag/fan/balloon phase. he is obsessed with all flags, ceiling fans and balloons. like…he freaks out at the sight of all of the above. so, he just about jumped out of his skin when he received 2 flags from grandma and grandpa wightman for christmas. he was over the moon, and quickly forgot about every other gift. he didn't let them go for the rest of the trip!

miles and his cousin adelyn became very good friends on this trip. they are the funniest creatures i've ever known. we had a merry merry christmas, hope you did too!

Black Bean Burgers // Linden

This recipe is so great because once you make the bean/veggie mixture you can use it for burgers or for filling for tacos and burritos. Dinner for two nights! The other bonus about this is that if you are a vegetarian and are looking for good protein options, black beans and brown rice together make a complete protein. Oh and it tastes REALLY good too so try this recipe!
Here is what you will need:
3 TB olive oil ( I use garlic olive oil)
2 cloves garlic minced
1 onion chopped
2  zucchinis diced
2 cans black beans rinsed and drained
3 cups cooked brown rice (I use 2 packs of trader joes frozen brown rice)
salt and pepper
garlic salt
sauté onions and garlic in oil for a couple of minutes. Add the zucchini and continue to sauté for about 5 more minutes. Add the black beans. Season with salt ,pepper and garlic salt. Cook on low for a few minutes.  Add half of your brown rice. Place the mixture in the blender and mix just until everything is blended. You still want some texture in the mix. Pour back into the pan and add the rest of the rice. Mix well. Place in the fridge for an hour before forming into patties for burgers or use right away for tacos and burritos.  Hope you like them as much as we do! Enjoy!

Felt Banner // Sheena

Who doesn’t love a cute banner? You can use them for so many things- birthdays, holidays, announcements, kids rooms….whatever you want!  This banner is so SUPER EASY you can whip it up in a snap for any occasion.  No sewing, no tracing of patterns….my kind of craft!  Here is what you need-
-FELT SHEETS
-RICK RACK
-FELT LETTER STICKERS
-SCISSORS
-HOT GLUE GUN
Step 1.  Fold one of your felt sheets in half and cut down the center.
Step 2.  Take each of those halves and cut each of them in half
Step 3.  Take each of those quarters, fold in half and cut from bottom corner in an upward diagonal. So that you will end up with a shape like this.  Repeat with remaining sheets until you have enough for each letter of whatever you are spelling.
Step 4.  Lay out all your shapes side by side.  Now pull out your adhesive letters and apply one to each shape until you have your message spelled out.
Step 5.  Lay out your rick rack and apply a thin strip of hot glue to the top of you first letter.  Lay it face down and lined up with your rick rack.
Step 6.  Continue gluing each letter on with a little space in between until they are all glued on the rick rack.  Be sure to leave space on each end for hanging.
Step 7.  Hang and enjoy!!
